MY RECENT LETTER TO THE EDITOR

(Sunday, August 31 St. Joseph News-Press):

A $100 million windfall

The Missouri Hospital Association has targeted my race, backing my opponent.  Had I not led the effort to stop the illegal rollout of Insure Missouri, taxpayers would have been duped out of a hundred million dollar a year windfall by Missouri hospitals, which would have been paid twice for providing the same care they do now.

Missouri hospitals are already partially paid by the government to provide free care to all people under the poverty level.  People who buy health insurance also subsidize such hospital care through their premiums--that is one reason why insurance is so high.  In 2006, Missouri hospitals made a total profit of $761 million, even after providing care to the uninsured under the current system.  Do they need to make even more?

Under Insure Missouri, they would have made more--a hundred million dollars a year more.  They would have continued to receive their government subsidies and inflated insurance payments in addition to the new plan payments, for providing much the same care they do now!  But my changes to the bill would have protected patients and taxpayers and paid the hospitals fairly.  That is why they killed my bill--it foiled their true but hidden intent.

Their actions showed that hospitals care more about their own bottom lines than they do about the uninsured.  Heartland and the Missouri Hospital Association have targeted me because I wouldn't let the hospital industry take 100 million dollars a year windfall from Missouri taxpayers.  In ten years, that is a billion dollars, a powerful incentive to keep me from going back to Jefferson City to ensure that any new plan to cover the uninsured does not cheat the taxpayers like this one tried to do.  But watching out for taxpayers is exactly what I hope voters will give me a mandate to do, and why I hope they will be careful not to be misled by half-truths or even bald-faced lies said about me in the coming days.
