Rob Schaaf, M.D., a family physician in St. Joseph, Missouri, has been married to Debbie (Schoenlaub) since 1983, and they have two children, Robert and Renee. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Missouri Western State College (now University) in 1979, he earned his MD degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1983. He serves on the Council of the Missouri State Medical Association, and its Legislative Committee. He also serves on the Board of the Missouri State Medical Foundation. He is past-president of the Buchanan County Medical Society, and past Chairman of the Department of Family Practice at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph. He was medical director of Hands of Hope Hospice, and of the Gower Convalescent Center, helped form Health Choice of Northwest Missouri, a managed care company, and served on the local State Hospital’s Advisory Board. He is a member of the Missouri Pilot’s Association, Missouri Farm Bureau, and The St. Joseph and Savannah Area Chambers of Commerce. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in November, 2002, re-elected in 2004 and 2006, and chairs the Special Committee on Healthcare Transformation. He serves on the Committee on Health Care Policy and is a member of the Appropriations Committee on Health, Mental Health and Social Services and the Budget Committee. He is known for his “paperless” office. His legislative aide is Karen Gassmann. On April 1, 2004, Dr. Schaaf and his partners started "MoDocs", the Missouri Doctors Mutual Insurance Company, a medical malpractice insurance company, in order to help lower premiums and keep Missouri doctors in Missouri. Dr. Schaaf can be seen on Friday evenings on KQ2 answering questions from viewers on "Live at Five". His legislative forums are usually held from mid December through the end of April from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Friday nights alternating between the Andrew County Courthouse and Missouri Western State College (see below).
